With fists half-closed I promise to release
If you will but see things my way after all.
Yes, I’ll give you everything!
Except that which I’m afraid you’ll take.
I’m right, you know, in what I do,
In what I think, and where I go.
I’m capable to live life my way.
The only reason I offer up these half-closed fists
Is not because I’m weak but because—
Well, maybe because I just want you to feel strong.
You see, I’m right in what I do
And once you realize this,
Of course I will surrender!

Homesickness
Yearning to be there instead of here Where the ones who know you best Still love you most; Yet, seeing a bigger picture And a God who is stronger Than our longings.
Time
Drapes on life's vapor
Above groping fingertips
And shadows the urgency
That this moment
Cannot be fully lived
Before it is gone.
Refugee
Specially selected Friend, Can you find a way to live? To take advantage of every day and be the first to make a home inspired by your history? To dare to dream of beauty? To save your child- your perfect baby- and to offer the gift of security? Can you manage to live better next year? And is there a way to forget this black adventure?
This is a work of appropriation (the art of intentionally altering or borrowing words from a pre-existing source). Pre-existing source: a department store’s Black Friday website page.

Unsafe
Let me go.
Let the icy wind
Seep into my shelter.
Let me shiver.
Let me cry.
Let adversity swirl
Around my ankles.
Let me struggle
And be afraid.
Let unconditional Love
Illuminate the way.
Let me be unsafe.
Walking in Phoenix
The drying sun scalds A tree of drooping red pods The humming planes are low enough To brush with jealous fingertips Shrubbery sprawls over landscape Like frazzled starfish A name--Jason--engraved In concrete not yet dry A squeaking rope fastens A willful flag to its pole Windows of a lonely skyscraper Glow pink in sleepy sunlight Choruses of weary air conditioners Ricochet between adobe houses Breezes dance along baked concrete And chase us inside
