A couple of weeks ago, we had a team listening exercise in which each of us had to describe our dream vacation. A teammate would listen carefully and later give the details to the larger group.
What is my dream vacation? I like to think I’m adventurous, like maybe backpacking across Europe or ending up on the African savannah. A friend and I are planning a 40th birthday trip (still a few years off, but we might as well have a blast planning). She wanted to go to Australia until she heard about the poisonous snakes. I’m still voting for Scandinavia.
One teammate said he wants to go to every English speaking country over the course of 5 years. One wanted to travel to every continent. Another wanted Switzerland, another Alaska.
I said Ireland. I’d take a small fishing village on the west coast with a stack of books and plenty of solitude. I’d soak in the wild coastal nature and eat oysters every day. Maybe I’d slip into the city every now and then for a hot chocolate and street musicians. Maybe I’d invite a quiet friend along and we could drink Irish tea and be alone together in the gentle drizzle of a rainy day.
That’s the best I can think up right now. But I’m curious what everyone else’s dream vacations would be. Well? What would you choose? Feel free to leave a comment so I can dream with you.

I can think of so many different places that would make the perfect vacation, and so I think fitting them all in about 3 weeks would be best. I think backpacking over parts of Europe and Scandinavia would be one of my dreams. Or riding horses over a Middle Eastern desert… visiting Russia if it were possible. Going to a castle. Visiting Machu Picchu 🙂
Backpacking sounds so adventurous…like you’d get to see a lot of our world in one trip.
Which castle would you go to?
There are several I would like to see. Hohenwerfen Castle in Werfen, Austria, or Hochosterwitz Castle in Austria as well. I have German roots, so something in Austria or Germany I would find interesting, but then I would also be interested in something with more Slavic roots as well. I could spend a lifetime discovering the history of Europe, I think.
Oh, I know! There are so many charming places. Even the quiet little villages with the unmarked landmarks are so full of history it can almost blow my mind.
Your dream vacation sounds absolutely perfect. Can I be the friend who goes along? I promise to be very quiet.
Sure thing! How soon can you go?
I can’t even…this open-ended question is SO hard to answer! I’d love to tour the British Isles, of course. That sounds lovely (and expensive). But then, my husband loved his time in New Zealand and that sounds fabulous too. And something Scandinavian and cozy and fire-lit sounds perfect. Ugh. This is too hard of a question!
But there’s so much space for dreaming. Besides, dreaming is at least half the fun. 🙂
